Entering Hacienda Las Cuevas Terra Lodge feels like immersing into a fantasy story, where men do not live in traditional houses but in cozy little houses under ground, like those from Hobbits in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy written by the well-known writer JRR Tolkien. And Hacienda Las Cuevas is exactly that, a hotel carved inside a cave, dug as a hacienda house about 45 years ago by engineer and inventor Álvaro Bustamante. The cave excavation was made by hand, pick and shovel, so it took around 20 years to be completed.

Today, after a 10 year restoration process carried out by Juan Simón Bustamante and Margarita Andrade, current owners and nephews of Álvaro, we can still find traces of excavation pits in corridors and yet we will find ourselves in environments where details were chosen very carefully, achieving an extraordinary environment where rustic meets the comfort of modern world. Staying at Hacienda Las Cuevas makes you feel like being in one of the very well known cave hotels of Capadocia, Turkey, but with the added bonus of the mysticism and charm of the Cordillera de los Andes.

The hotel has 7 amazing rooms, each with a private living room and a wonderful view of the outside garden. The restaurant has a capacity for 40 people in which 3-course menus are prepared with the most high quality gastronomy, where Ecuadorian homemade flavor cuisine is preserved and you can enjoy a glass of wine with an exceptional view while the fireplace keeps you warm. The invitation is to taste exquisite flavors created by our local chef, such as the Terra Lodge tempura style figs filled with cream cheese, and accompanied with vanilla ice cream.

A Jacuzzi in a cave invites you to relax and enjoy the energy of land and water; a cheese-maturing cave is the perfect spot for cheese lovers who enjoy combining its tasting with wine savoring; add to that rooms and patios where you can feel the countryside tranquility.

Hacienda Las Cuevas Terra Lodge is inside a property of 107 hectares where tourists can perform various activities. Horseback riding, hiking, cheese and wine tasting, climbing, or even experience the visit to a rose plantation with the largest stems you can imagine.

In one of the walks after following a path that follows the riverbed, you will visit two small waterfalls and a natural cave that, after entering a few meters you will see how water seeps into the rock creating a small stream of water completely fit for human consumption.

Visitors at Hacienda Las Cuevas can enjoy experimental tourism by participating in harvest, planting, milking and cheese making activities, where they can make their own cheese with freshly milked milk to take home or taste it at breakfast next morning. To accomplish this, tourist must curdle the milk and press the cheese as it has been done in the farm throughout history. In this activity guests can experiment making cheese with basil, oregano, chili or a mixture of these three condiments.
