DINING WITH HISTORY

Located in a magical corner of the old Loma Grande neighborhood in the midst of Quito´s colonial downtown, this restaurant seems to have sprung from a fairy tale. Next to the ancient chapel of Our Lord of Miracles, it is actually a time capsule that whisks us in an instant back to the 17th century.

This restaurant is a hidden gem. In a building more than four centuries old, Los Milagros offers a mix of traditional cuisine with folk dancing. This is authentic colonial Quito and in Los Milagros its traditions remain alive and well.

Fausto Caballero, the restaurant manager, is the perfect host. In an entertaining conversation, he unveils the history behind the menu, its origins, the era to which each dish belongs and the organic produce used in preparation. Local visitors can recall fleeting memories of cooking details once heard from elderly relatives.

“Our proposition,” Caballero explains, “is to blend dining and dancing in a unique setting, such that this becomes an experience delightful to all the senses.” In the menu, of course, some Bonitísimas (very pretty ones) prepared with traditional flour made from purple corn. Also, the Chicken a las AntiguasRregalas, a stew in seafood sauce; or the Lomo del Cura, meat with a sauce made of consecration wine. These plates, with recipes that are over 200 hundred years old, were recovered and have reborn in Los Milagros.
